Chapter Eleven

Shifters were fast, but we lost them quick enough in the helicopter. Speed plus altitude left them in the dust. The red hats slowed them down, too. A line of headlights did race down the road that ran in front of the property, trying to catch up to us, but by then, we had enough of a lead that they wouldn’t be able to track us.

“Hello.” I gave Vitor a wary look. “Would you care to explain?”

“Explain what?”

“Those were your automatons, weren’t they? How’d you do that?” He’d once told me the First Witch had given him some extra ability, but automatons took serious witchcraft. Way above a few extra bells and whistles.

“Automatons?” His expression was blank as if the word didn’t mean anything to him.

“The red hats.” I jerked a thumb back to where we’d come from.

“Oh. Them.” Understanding dawned, and he gave a slow nod. “Those were not, what you say? Automatons.”

“What were they, then, and how’d you do it?”

“I did not do anything. They are Fae.”

“Fae?” I scoffed. “This isn’t the time for jokes. Get real.”

“The portal is leaking. The red hats are the first wave.” His dark gaze locked with mine, serious as a live grenade.

I scrubbed my face with my hands. “You’re sure?”

“Yes. I would know them anywhere. I fought them many times.”

“They kill like that.” I snapped my fingers.

“Yes. They are very dangerous. You see now why the portal must be closed.”

“Yeah. I get it.” I rubbed my forehead. A headache wanted to smack me around. I did my best to push it back. “How’d they find us?”

“They just do. It is part of their magic.”

“Goddess.” That was all I could say. I fell silent after that. My life was on speed and could use a good rehab program. Preferably residential one with a lot of chocolate.

Vitor gave me a side eyed glance, his lips pinched. Disapproval emanated from him. Pissy Vitor was pissy.

I raised an eyebrow. “What?”

“You do not have to look like that.” Vitor looked me up and down.

“Oh. Right.” I was still in my Tex skin. I closed my eyes for the second shift of my life. I pictured my original self as firmly as I could in my mind, and in a daring experiment, I edited out some cellulite and muffin top. If that worked, I hadn’t become a shifter so much as won the genetic lottery.

See also: I’d finally become a woman who could eat whatever she wanted and never get fat.

I bit my lip and concentrated extra hard. I wanted this so bad, I could taste it the way salt made everything sweeter.

Oh, Goddess. I was going to absolutely destroy some donuts, pizza and tacos in the very near future. And ice cream. Maybe a bag of those chocolate truffles with the gooey centers, too. And chips. No, wait, make that nachos with extra chemical cheese. Then chips, if I felt like it.

My stomach gave a loud growl of ‘hell yeah.’

I opened my eyes and gave myself
